Dr.
Piirto became Interim Department Head for the Natural Resources
Management Department September 2001. Dr. Piirto teaches
Introduction to Forest Ecosystem Management, Forest Harvesting and
Utilization, Silviculture and Vegetation Management, Environmental
Impact Analysis, Resource Fire Control, and graduate courses. He was
the recipient of the 1995 Dole Outstanding Teacher Award for the
College of Agriculture. Dr. Piirto authored a McGraw-Hill
publication titled, Study Guide to Accompany Introduction to
Forestry and Renewable Resources. He has also authored numerous
scientific
publications and technical reports. He is co-advisor to
the Cal Poly Logging Team and is actively involved in forest
management activities at Swanton Pacific Ranch. Dr. Piirto is a
Registered Professional Forester and Certified Silviculturist.

Christopher
A. Dicus, Ph.D.

Dr. Dicus, our resident fire guru, comes to Cal Poly from down on
the bayou in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There, he was a Gilbert
Research Fellow and received a Ph.D. in Forestry at Louisiana State
University. He received an M.S. in Forest Resources from Utah
State University and a B.S. in Forestry and Wildlife from Louisiana
Tech University.
Dr. Dicus serves as the
President of the Los Padres Chapter of the Society of American
Foresters, is on the Board of Directors of the San Luis Obispo
County FireSafe Council, and is active in the Association for Fire
Ecology and the International Association of Wildland Fire. His
research interests are fire in the wildland-urban interface, effects of forest management practices on
fuel loads and subsequent fire behavior, and residual ecosystem effects from fuels
modification treatments, and forest regulation.

Dr. Dietterick is Director of
Swanton Pacific Ranch. He teaches Watershed Management, Watershed Protection, Forest and Range Hydrology, and GIS. His research and consulting interests include water quality monitoring to evaluate Best Management Practices effectiveness, stream restoration, hydrologic modeling, watershed evaluation, and modeling of urban forest ecosystems. Specialties: Watershed Management; Hydrology; GIS.
Samantha J. Gill, Ph.D.

Dr. Gill has a joint appointment between the Natural Resources Management and BioResource and Agricultural Engineering departments. She teaches Forest Resources, Forest Mensuration, Applications of GIS in Natural Resources, Computers and Surveying. Dr. Gill is currently working on research projects which include model application involving the modeling of tree crown profiles, models of crown radii and crown cover, a comparison of various growth and yield models for California, and accuracy assessments of vegetation maps. Specialty: Forest Biometrics.

Dr. Goldenberg teaches
Introduction to Recreation, Parks, and Tourism, Challenge Course
Leadership and Facilitation, Recreation Program Planning,
Outdoor/Adventure Leadership and Education, Leisure Behavior, and
Leisure Theory. Her current research includes wilderness education,
means-end theory, and outcomes related to interest-specific parks.
She continues to work with Outward Bound as a consultant.

Dr. Greenwood teaches Introduction to Recreation, Parks, & Tourism, Recreational Sport Programming, and Current Trends in Recreation, Parks, & Tourism. His current research centers on youth development through sport with his dissertation focused on the relationship between achievement goal theory and positive youth development in the context of American football. He is also interested in psychological, social, and management issues associated with youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate, and professional sports.

Dr. Greenwood teaches Sustainable Tourism, Travel and Tourism Planning, Assessment and Evaluation of Recreation, Parks and Tourism, and Leisure Theory. Her current research includes sustainable development in a tourism context, the economic impact of tourism development, and social and environmental issues associated with tourism and recreation. Dr. Greenwood continues her work on economic impact studies of visitors to state parks.
John H. Harris, Ph.D.

Dr. Harris teaches Natural Resources Management and Society, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Interpretation, Resource Recreation Management, Resource Recreation Planning, and Natural Resource Administration. Dr. Harris has published several refereed journal articles. He was honored as a Park and Recreation Commissioner for the City of Atascadero. He has received several external grants, and he has been recommended twice for the Cal Poly Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Harris’s interests involve students, family, church, hobbies, communication, and management. Specialties: Research Recreation Management; Legal Aspects of Recreation Management; Management of People in Outdoor Settings.

His current research includes wilderness education, recreational conflict, and organizational behavior within park management agencies. Dr. Jacobs
teaches Environmental and Wilderness Education, Leadership
in Recreation Parks & Tourism, Outdoor/Adventure Leadership, and
Assessment and Evaluation of Recreation Parks & Tourism. His current
research includes outdoor and camp leadership, and experiential
education. Dr. Jacobs continues to direct a summer camp, lead
wilderness adventure trips, and serve as a team building and
leadership trainer and consultant. He is the advisor for Rho Phi
Lambda, the program's national honor society.

was the Director of
Swanton Pacific Ranch. Dr.
Mark is a Registered Professional Forester for the State of
California. His projects include strategic planning for urban
forestry for California cities, featuring workshops for urban
forestry, networking for urban forestry, and tree finder for urban

Cynthia Moyer teaches
Introduction to Program Design, Financing Recreation Services, and
serves as the Recreation Internship Coordinator. Prior to joining
the faculty, she had over ten years in the nonprofit field
overseeing a variety of recreation programs and services. She was
selected as the CAFES
Advisor of the Year in 2002.

Dr.
Pillsbury’s teaching includes Forest Mensuration, Growth and
Yield, Hardwood Management, GIS, Applied Statistics and Sampling
Design, Computer Applications, Watershed Management and Protection,
and Forest and Range Hydrology. His research involves oaks and
hardwood management, remote sensing, biomass energy plantations,
landslide prediction studies, and aspen habitat analysis. His travel
and study includes Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Canada. Dr.
Pillsbury is a Registered Professional Forester.

Kendi Root, CMP is a certified Meeting Professional and teaches Festival and Event Management, Travel and Tourism Planning, and Convention and Meeting Management. She serves as the Coordinator for the program's annual fundraiser, providing students with a learn-by-doing
opportunity to plan and host a major event. She is also the REC Club advisor. Prior to joining the faculty, Professor Root's professional career included over 20 years of experience in the Event, Hospitality, Convention, and Meeting Management industry.

Dr. Thompson teaches Natural Resources Economics; Valuation, Growth and Yield; Policy, Administration and Management. He is Director of the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute. His current research activities involve numerous projects including oak woodlands policy decision modeling, valuation of interface forest health, implementation of ecosystem management philosophy to improve community college articulation. He is also involved in the Equity Leadership Program, a multi-agency project to increase the proportion of underrepresented individuals in the natural resource sciences starting in K-12 and leading to university and careers. He is the Society of American Foresters Club advisor and a Registered Professional Forester in California and Oklahoma. Specialties: Resource Economics and Econometrics; Forest Ecosystem Policy and Management.
James R. Vilkitis, Ph.D.

Dr. Vilkitis teaches Resource Ecology, Environmental Impact Analysis, Applied Resource Analysis, and Ecosystem Management. He is Director of the Coastal Resources Institute (CRI), and Advisor for the Association of Environmental Professionals Student Club. His achievements include director of CRI, United States Forest Service certificate of merit, Statewide Academic Senate, Statewide General Education and Breadth Committee, Statewide Senator, and he has been nominated for various teaching awards. Dr. Vilkitis is interested in creating artificial wetlands, habitat management and monitoring, resource management plans, fish/wildlife ecosystems management, as well as the use of teaching portfolios to enhance teaching and learning. Specialties: Resource Management; Ecology; Fish/Wildlife Management; Environmental Impact Assessment Methodologies.
